Ask Billy: The Best Electric Fence Kit for Intrusion Detection and Prevention

Security doesn’t have to be a headache

The days of “no need for security” are over, unfortunately. But security doesn’t need to be a headache! Life is meant for living, and a good security system allows you to live without fear.

If you’re looking to enhance your existing security system or install one from scratch read this to find out how to plan the best electric fence kit for intrusion detection and prevention.

For most of us, the norm is to just keep on keepin’ on until something happens that makes us re-assess. The vast majority of people don’t have a grand plan for when things go wrong and many folks don’t have plans at all.

When it comes to security though, it’s advisable to have a plan in place for how to protect your people and your property. If you already have a security system, I recommend assessing it regularly to ensure that it’s still fit for purpose.

Not sure whether your security kit is right for the job? No problem: in today’s blog, we’re going to be looking at the best electric fence kit for intrusion detection and prevention.

When determining whether you have the best electric fence kit for intrusion detection and prevention, I suggest starting with the following:

Needs analysis

Self-assessment

Situational assessment

When looking at security, it all starts with a “needs” analysis. That means determining the threat and working out how best to protect your family. The first line of defense is an outer perimeter barrier that demarcates your space. Ask yourself what the barrier must achieve?  Do vehicles, people, or animals need to be deterred, detected, or delayed?

Once you know the answer to this question, you can start to determine what security measures you need to put in place.    JVA supplies a wide range of high-quality security products that can help get you started.  Check out our catalog here https://store.jva-usa.com/

Your self-assessment can be as simple as checking that the information the first respondents have for you is correct.     For example, if your medical condition has changed does anybody need to be aware?    Take care to ensure that your contact details are valid should you need to be reached in an emergency situation, and having a list of the respondent’s numbers in a prominent place is always a good idea, too.

The situational assessment reminds you to complete those tasks that have been overlooked or forgotten.    Start by checking the state of your current security systems to ensure it’s in good working order.     If you’ve just moved to your property, find out who your neighbors are and ask them to exchange contact details.     A plan is especially vital when you have a family to consider. Take the time to figure out who does what, when, and how in any situation that may arise.     Potential situations can range from a power failure to an unwelcome visitor, so make sure that you and your family are prepared for anything.

First Line of Protection

Your first line of protection must demarcate the area of your property and be capable of detecting an intrusion of the perimeter.    The longer the barrier can delay the infiltrator, the more time you will have to put a plan of action in motion (every minute counts).

Firstly, your gate at the main entrance of your property needs to be automated so that you don’t need to leave the safety of your vehicle when returning or leaving home.    Centurion gate motors are my recommendation for this, and my post here explains why.  https://jva-usa.com/ask-billy-what-are-the-benefits-of-a-centurion-gate-motor/

If you don’t currently have an outer barrier, we can assist with the design of cost-effective, fit-for-purpose security fencing.     If an existing fence is in place, there are a number of ways to enhance it to create a system that detects intrusion. Here are a few detection options to consider (all of the following are supplied by JVA):

The More Layers, the Better

In all cases, the more layers to your security system, the better.    Once the outer barrier is in place, consider what complementary technology can be added to enhance the design.    Every property has its own unique security needs and measures like perimeter beams and/or watchdogs each have their benefits.   Whatever you choose to use, your security measures can all be managed from one device.     Nobody wants to be carrying around multiple phones and tablets!

Here’s a full list of complementary systems for consideration.     If you’re not sure what you should go with just give us a call and we can advise:

  • Sensor lights

If your property is large , outdoor passive infrared beams, sensor lights, or cameras are a good option .    This is of greater significance if the whole fence line cannot be seen from the house.    For any size property, I always recommend installing an alarm system in the house and keeping keys in the locks on the inside of the doors.
